Ebrard says tariff hike on China is legitimate

Mexico defends tariff increase as a legitimate response to uneven competition

Mexico’s government has defended its decision to raise tariffs on imports from countries without trade agreements, including China, arguing the move complies with international trade rules and aims to level the playing field for domestic industries.

Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said the policy follows an analysis of sectors such as steel, footwear, textiles, and automotive, where imported goods have been entering the market at significantly lower prices—sometimes even below production costs—putting local producers at a disadvantage.

Officials pointed to possible subsidies or differing tax structures in exporting countries as factors distorting competition. In response, Mexico introduced tariffs to rebalance market conditions and safeguard domestic industries.

Authorities emphasized that the measure is not targeted at any specific country but applies broadly to nations without trade agreements. They also noted that tariffs are a recognized tool under international trade frameworks when unfair practices are suspected.

China has criticized the move and launched a review of its economic impact, warning that it could affect billions of dollars in exports and potentially lead to countermeasures.

The situation reflects broader global trade tensions, as countries increasingly adopt protective measures to support key industries amid shifting supply chains.
