Mexico’s Corn Imports Rise 24% in January 2026

Figures from Mexico’s National Customs Agency show that the country imported 1.97 million metric tons of white and yellow corn in January 2026, a 24.7% increase compared to the same month last year.

The total value of these imports reached $403 million, up 15.8% from January 2025.

Imports of sorghum, rice, and soybeans also rose, while wheat and beans declined.

The increase comes amid official statements highlighting self-sufficiency in white corn for human consumption, though not in yellow corn, which is primarily used for animal feed.

According to the Agricultural Markets Consulting Group (GCMA), Mexico purchased 110,000 metric tons of white corn abroad in 2025—mainly from the United States—nearly four times more than in previous periods.

GCMA Director Juan Carlos Anaya noted that corn producers in the state of Chihuahua are operating in an environment where a stronger peso makes imports more competitive, while domestic farmers face higher production costs and weaker international reference prices.
