Progress Continues on USMCA Discussions Ahead of the 2026 World Cup

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Monday that the 2026 FIFA World Cup could offer a positive setting for progress on the upcoming review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Her remarks followed a visit to Washington, where she attended the official tournament draw.

Speaking during a press briefing, Sheinbaum noted that the atmosphere surrounding the event highlighted the unifying role of sports. She also confirmed that she met with U.S. President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to reaffirm plans to continue technical and diplomatic work linked to the trade agreement.

According to Sheinbaum, the three governments have appointed teams to address specific areas of the agreement as the 2026 review approaches. She added that consultations with various industries are underway to gather input on priorities and concerns.

She emphasized her administration’s intention to maintain a stable and respectful bilateral relationship with the United States, stressing the importance of dialogue due to geographic proximity, longstanding economic ties, and the presence of millions of people of Mexican origin living abroad.

Although the meeting was not framed as a formal political negotiation, Sheinbaum described the discussion as constructive and focused on strengthening cooperation among the three countries. She clarified that security matters were not part of the conversation.

The president also expressed confidence in Mexico’s economic outlook and encouraged continued trust in the country’s development strategy.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled for June and July and hosted jointly by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, is expected to pose challenges across logistics, transportation, trade, and public administration as the first tournament shared by three host nations.
