Progress in Tariff Negotiations Between Mexico and the United States

Mexico City – Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard reported that Mexico is continuing talks with the United States regarding the reduction or removal of tariffs applied to Mexican exports. He noted that discussions are taking place directly with the U.S. administration and that updates are expected later this month.

When asked about the lifting of tariffs for countries such as Brazil and Canada, Ebrard explained that each case is based on different conditions and criteria. He added that Mexico currently faces a somewhat more favorable scenario and that negotiations remain ongoing.

Preliminary Review of USMCA Consultations

Ebrard said that a preliminary summary of Mexico’s consultation process on the USMCA has already been shared with President Claudia Sheinbaum. The review includes 30 sector consultations, 32 meetings with state governments, and additional feedback received digitally.

The final report will be completed and submitted in January to both the Senate and the federal administration. According to Ebrard, the consultations have not been paused; they are simply reaching their conclusion.

Growth in Foreign Direct Investment

The secretary also anticipates positive results in the upcoming Foreign Direct Investment report, to be released on Wednesday. While he did not disclose specific figures, he noted that the increase is significant and driven largely by new investments rather than only reinvestments.
