California Growers Push for Seasonal Limits on Mexican Avocado Imports

The California Avocado Commission has asked U.S. trade officials to consider setting seasonal caps on avocado imports from Mexico, covering the marketing period from March through August.

According to the commission, the proposal is intended to stabilize the market and support domestic growers, noting that Mexico’s larger production volume allows it to supply avocados at lower prices.

The request was submitted to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative for review as part of the upcoming USMCA evaluation.

The commission also urged authorities to reinstate the phytosanitary inspection protocol established in 1997 for Mexican avocado imports. They noted that U.S. inspection personnel were previously withdrawn due to security concerns and replaced with Mexican inspectors.
