ICC Mexico warns of potential stagnation amid USMCA uncertainty

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Mexico warned that U.S. trade and economic policy could complicate Mexico’s outlook in 2026, increasing the risk of economic stagnation due to uncertainty surrounding tariffs and the future of the USMCA.

Kenneth Smith, vice president of the organization, noted that there is still no clarity on whether the agreement will undergo a review or a partial or full renegotiation, nor on how long such a process might take. He explained that by the end of the first quarter, the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) is expected to present a more detailed position, which will clarify the issues to be formally raised with Mexico and possibly Canada.

Smith emphasized that this context calls for caution regarding statements from U.S. authorities, given the lack of concrete definitions about the direction of the trade agreement.

Meanwhile, Marlene Garayzar, also vice president of ICC Mexico, said that the USMCA review could become an opportunity to strengthen Mexico’s competitiveness. She highlighted the need to diversify foreign trade and expand ties with other markets, particularly the European Union, in line with recent initiatives announced by Mexico’s Ministry of Economy.
