Mexican-made tortillas are not only consumed domestically — they are also shipped abroad to markets in Asia, Europe and North America. According to Homero López García, president of the National Tortilla Council, shipments reach places like Dubai, Russia, Japan, China and the United States. Daily deliveries cross the border through Tijuana and Mexicali, while other batches travel by sea to Asian destinations.
Roughly 30% of tortillas sold outside Mexico are purchased by Mexican communities living abroad, while about 70% are consumed by locals in those countries.
Despite their international reach, exports remain small: only about 1% of Mexico’s tortilla output is sent overseas. National production is estimated at 8.03 billion kilograms per year. In addition, April 2026 will mark the second annual celebration of the International Tortilla Day.
