Mexico seeks dialogue with China amid tariff tensions

Mexico’s Economy Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, announced that Mexico and China will hold a series of meetings this year to address trade issues, including tariffs that have recently strained bilateral relations.

Speaking at a press conference, Ebrard said both countries maintain ongoing communication, highlighting an upcoming High-Level Group meeting as a key opportunity to review trade conditions and current challenges.

A major focus will be on the obstacles faced by Mexican exports entering the Chinese market, as well as differences in trade procedures between the two nations.

The discussions will also take place alongside Mexico’s participation in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, to be hosted in China, which is expected to facilitate further dialogue.

The announcement comes amid tariff measures imposed by Mexico on imports from countries without free trade agreements. While China has raised concerns, Mexican authorities maintain that the measures aim to ensure fair competition and protect domestic industries, rather than target any specific country.
