Mexico aims to boost bilateral trade with Canada and encourage new investments from that country in various sectors of the economy during the official visit of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, scheduled for Thursday and Friday.
The visit takes place amid global trade tensions, following the imposition of tariffs by the U.S. government on certain products from its trade partners. These measures have raised questions about compliance with the terms of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
Both Mexico and Canada have expressed their interest in maintaining the agreement and actively participating in consultation rounds ahead of the scheduled review in January 2026.
The governments of Mexico and the United States officially announced the start of the consultation process, outlining participation mechanisms and its duration. Mexico established a 60-day period, with the option of extending it by an additional 30 days to align with the 90-day timeline set by the United States.
This process is considered significant to address sensitive issues such as the unilateral imposition of tariffs and labor-related matters within the framework of the trade agreement.
