Mexico Sees No Signs of U.S. Withdrawal from USMCA

Mexico’s president said there are no indications that the United States intends to leave the USMCA, noting that the issue has not been raised in recent discussions with U.S. authorities.

The trade agreement between Mexico, the United States, and Canada is currently undergoing a review process established within its own framework, scheduled to continue through July. According to the Mexican government, the deal remains important for all three economies.

The remarks followed reports from a U.S. newspaper suggesting a possible U.S. exit from the agreement. Mexico’s president stated that there are no official messages or signals supporting that scenario.

Originally launched in 1994 as NAFTA, the agreement has faced tensions linked to U.S. tariff policies. Despite this, Mexico’s economic authorities have expressed confidence in the treaty’s continuity after meetings with U.S. trade representatives.

The review process began in September with consultations among the three countries and key stakeholders. Negotiations have continued since January, with a formal USMCA Council meeting scheduled for July 1.

The agreement is considered vital for Mexico, as more than 80% of its exports go to the U.S. market.
