Mexico’s Economy Secretary, Marcelo Ebrard, stated that the government will wait for the official publication of tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump on heavy vehicles, pharmaceuticals, and other goods before issuing a formal position.
“There are announced tariffs, but they have not yet been published. I prefer to wait until they are made official to review what each one includes. Then we will determine our stance,” Ebrard explained during the Mentes en Acción event in Mexico City.
He noted that Mexico is in communication with US Commerce Secretary Howerd Lutnick to clarify the scope of these measures, adding that sometimes even US technical areas lack full clarity on their details.
Regarding comments made by US trade representative Jamieson Greer that upcoming reviews of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) may take a more bilateral form by 2026, Ebrard said negotiations naturally involve strong bilateral elements, though there are also trilateral mechanisms such as the dispute settlement system.
On the tariffs imposed on Mexican steel and aluminum, Ebrard mentioned that he will hold talks with his counterparts this Tuesday and that he may travel to the United States soon if necessary. He emphasized that Mexico’s position is based on ensuring compliance with what has been established in the USMCA.
