Mexico’s meat industry is seeking new export markets after the U.S. border shutdown

Mexico’s meat industry announced it is exploring alternative export destinations following the temporary shutdown of the U.S. border and uncertainty over when it might reopen, amid the resurgence of the New World screwworm — a parasite that has caused daily losses estimated at over $11 million.

Alonso Fernández Flores, head of the National Association of Federally Inspected Establishments (ANETIF), highlighted that the outbreak has disrupted live cattle exports and created financial strain for producers and exporters. He noted that the sector is focusing on diversifying export markets and reinforcing production capacity.

Despite border restrictions, tariffs and global tensions, Fernández said the industry remains resilient and maintains a positive outlook. He pointed out that the Federal Inspection Type (TIF) system has enabled greater access to international markets and facilitated entry into destinations such as the Philippines, Asia and Europe.

He added that the meat sector contributes 2.3% of Mexico’s GDP and continues to expand at a rate above the broader food industry, mainly supported by robust domestic demand. Regarding the upcoming review of the North American trade agreement (USMCA), he expressed confidence that conditions will remain favorable for Mexico’s role as a strategic supplier to the U.S. and Canada.

Mexico remains a significant exporter of beef and pork, shipping more than 276,000 tons annually to the United States. The industry will discuss its outlook at the seventh TIF Food Industry Summit to be held November 12–14 in Puerto Vallarta.

The statement comes after U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that the U.S. might purchase beef from Argentina to curb domestic inflation. Meanwhile, the Mexican government reported a 28% reduction in the screwworm infestation as part of a joint containment plan with the United States.
