Mexico.– The National Alliance of Small Merchants (ANPEC) estimates that hosting a Christmas or New Year’s dinner for about 15 people will cost roughly 17,000 pesos this year, marking a 17% increase compared to last year.
According to the analysis, most of the spending goes toward appetizers, main dishes, and beverages. Appetizers such as snacks, cheeses, pâtés, and olives are estimated at around 1,750 pesos. Main courses —including options like turkey, pork leg, cod, or romeritos with side dishes— account for approximately 7,150 pesos.
Beverages represent an estimated cost of 4,500 pesos, covering beer, sparkling cider, spirits, punch, soft drinks, and ice. Desserts add about 1,500 pesos, while basic home decorations contribute roughly 1,200 pesos. Gift exchanges can increase expenses by 500 to over 1,000 pesos.
ANPEC also compared these figures with the cost of dining out. High-end hotels may charge from 5,000 pesos per person, with premium packages costing significantly more. Mid-range hotels range between 2,500 and 5,000 pesos per guest, while seasonal restaurant menus typically cost between 1,200 and 1,800 pesos per person.
The organization notes that celebrating outside the home can be two to five times more expensive per person than hosting a dinner at home, where costs are shared and more flexible. Home celebrations also support local businesses and small retailers.
Overall, ANPEC estimates the average cost per person at around 1,140 pesos, highlighting that home-hosted gatherings remain a more adaptable option amid rising prices.
