Corn producers in Mexico have announced that they may block toll booths and highways if no agreement is reached by Monday afternoon on the guaranteed price they are requesting. Representatives from the sector argue that production of corn, beans, and wheat has declined and that current market conditions place them at a disadvantage against imported grains.
They also say that the lack of domestic subsidies has increased the country’s reliance on foreign supplies. Producers are asking for a guaranteed price of 7,200 pesos per ton of corn. If negotiations stall, they plan to stage blockades in states such as Guanajuato, Michoacán and Jalisco.
