On November 23, new equipment and infrastructure were inaugurated at the Veracruz customs facility, a project designed to improve operational efficiency and speed up cargo processing in the port area.
In an interview with XEU Noticias, Marco Antonio Sansores, president of the Association of Customs Brokers, explained that the new facility should help ease congestion, particularly the long lines of trucks that often form in Bahía Norte.
He noted that this customs site will work simultaneously with the existing one, allowing both sections to share the flow and clearance of goods. Although the new facility is already active, Sansores pointed out that its operations will ramp up gradually, as it is not yet ready to handle full cargo capacity.
He added that traffic improvements will also depend on processing times within the port terminals, which contribute to current delays.
The new customs area includes monitoring systems and lanes equipped with document-scanning technology, replacing some of the physical inspection booths. According to Sansores, this level of automation will enhance security and help prevent the movement of restricted goods.
The facility is expected to reach full operation within about a year, once remaining sections are completed.
