Mexico’s Avocado Leadership Faces Rising Global Competition

Mexico remains the world’s leading avocado exporter, but its dominance is increasingly being challenged. Climate pressures, rising production costs, and limited irrigation infrastructure are narrowing its edge, while new producers expand their footprint in global markets.

The avocado industry is now valued at over $20 billion and continues to grow steadily. International projections suggest that by 2030, avocados could become the most traded tropical fruit, with exports nearing 3.9 million tons and global production reaching 12 million tons.

Latin America will continue to dominate supply, accounting for roughly 74% of global output due to favorable growing conditions. At the same time, these conditions have enabled more countries to enter the market.

Mexico still holds key advantages, including year-round production and geographic proximity to the United States, the world’s largest importer. However, recent droughts and heatwaves have affected export volumes and contributed to price volatility.

Meanwhile, South American producers are gaining momentum. Peru has strengthened its position through scale, while Colombia is rapidly expanding its presence. Both countries are actively targeting growth in the U.S. and European markets.

Additional supply is also expected from outside the region, with Australia projected to recover production and New Zealand anticipating higher output. This growing supply is creating a more competitive environment and, at times, downward pressure on prices.

Domestically, Mexico faces structural challenges. A significant portion of its avocado-growing land lacks irrigation, increasing exposure to climate variability. Rising labor costs and soil degradation further complicate long-term sustainability.

Security concerns in certain producing regions add another layer of complexity. While Mexico remains a key player in global avocado trade, increasing competition and internal constraints highlight the need to strengthen productivity and resilience in the years ahead.
