Mexico’s manufacturing sector ends 2025 with a moderate downturn

Mexico’s manufacturing sector is estimated to have closed 2025 with a decline, according to the Monthly Timely Indicator of Manufacturing Activity published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

In December 2025, the indicator pointed to a 1.1% year-over-year contraction in manufacturing activity. For that month, the index stood at 97.2 points, serving as an early estimate of the Monthly Indicator of Industrial Activity (IMAI) for the manufacturing sector.

The sector’s performance reflected adjustments linked to U.S. tariff policy and broader shifts in global trade conditions. Despite these challenges, manufacturing activity in Mexico has remained resilient.

Even with the slowdown, the sector continues to play a key role in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI). Data from the Ministry of Economy show that Mexico received USD 40.9 billion in FDI during the third quarter of 2025, with manufacturing accounting for 37.1% of the total, underscoring its importance to the country’s economy.
