Producers call for a halt to large-scale imports of Brazilian beef

Meat industry representatives in Mexico are calling on the government to set clearer limits on beef imports from Brazil, saying that current high volumes may be disrupting the domestic market. They note that despite increased imports, consumer prices have not dropped significantly, raising concerns about competitiveness and market balance.

Leaders from pork and cattle producer groups argue that imports from countries without equivalent sanitary agreements can pose biosecurity concerns and price distortions. They are advocating for annual caps on meat imports from nations without free trade agreements to help protect local producers.

From January through October, Mexico has seen sizable imports of Brazilian beef. Some industry representatives warn that without policy adjustments, import volumes could continue growing in 2026, even though domestic production has the capacity to meet much of national demand.
