The National Chamber of the Rubber Industry (CNIH) expressed its support for the decree published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF), which establishes a temporary ban on the import of used tires into Mexico.
According to the chamber, this measure addresses environmental concerns and issues of unfair competition in the sector. The CNIH noted that for years the industry has been affected by practices in which used tires entered the country under the premise of being retreaded and exported, but were often sold directly without meeting minimum safety or quality standards.
In its statement, the organization indicated that the regulation represents a step toward a more sustainable and competitive industry. It also reiterated its commitment to strengthening the sector under international standards and to collaborating in the development of public policies that support its growth.
The decree, published on August 28, amends the regulatory framework of the Manufacturing, Maquiladora and Export Services Industry (IMMEX) Program, aiming to regulate foreign trade and contribute to the stability of national production.
According to data from the Ministry of Economy via DataMéxico, in 2024 total trade of used rubber tires in Mexico reached a value of 5.71 million dollars, including imports and exports.
