Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday that she hopes the United States will show “consideration” toward her country following the announcement of new tariffs on heavy vehicle imports.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced Thursday a set of new trade measures, including a 25% tariff on heavy vehicles and a 100% tariff on branded medicines. These measures are set to take effect this week.
During her daily press conference, Sheinbaum emphasized the strong interdependence between both countries in the automotive sector. She also noted that, except for finished vehicles and steel, Mexican exports to the United States have recently increased, largely due to the “zero-tariff” framework under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
“Trade relations with the United States remain highly important and represent a significant competitive advantage for Mexico,” she stated.
