Mexico Seeks to Complete USMCA Review by Year-End

Mexico is aiming to complete the USMCA review before the end of 2026 while seeking relief from U.S. tariffs affecting industries including automotive, steel, and aluminum.

Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard told the Mexican Senate that the agreement’s future is now clearer and said the government expects the USMCA to remain in place for the next decade, with annual reviews.

Ebrard also pointed to recent comments from U.S. President Donald Trump indicating that a new commercial understanding with Mexico could be approaching.

According to the minister, one of Mexico’s main negotiating priorities is reducing trade measures affecting Mexican vehicles, steel, and aluminum while providing greater certainty for companies operating across North American supply chains.

Ebrard also said Mexican exports currently face an average effective U.S. tariff of roughly 3% to 3.2%, below the rates paid by several competing economies.

Bilateral talks are continuing as both governments work through the remaining issues ahead of the completion of the trade review.
