New customs facility shortens entry times during initial operation

The new customs facility has significantly reduced entry times during its testing phase, according to Marco Sansores, president of the Association of Customs Brokers.

In an interview with XEU, Sansores explained that early data shows crossing times of around one hour, mainly due to traffic concentration during peak hours. However, he noted that in certain periods, vehicles have crossed in just minutes, reflecting a clear shift in operational dynamics.

He stated that the testing phase concluded last week and that operations are now fully open, except for refrigerated goods, which continue to be processed through the southern customs facility. All other cargo is now allowed to move through the northern customs area.

Sansores added that the new facility is being rolled out gradually, with limited operating hours, allowing authorities to fine-tune procedures and achieve positive test results. The opening of two additional inspection gates in 2026 is expected to further streamline operations.

He emphasized that the customs facility itself does not generate additional port traffic, but rather improves logistics by speeding up cargo clearance, offering a competitive advantage over other ports.

In terms of infrastructure, the new customs facility features 18 access points, compared to the six currently in operation. This expansion will triple entry and exit lanes and includes new export corridors. At present, two export lanes are active, with plans to add two more by 2026.

The facility also incorporates non-intrusive inspection equipment and automated checkpoints that operate using QR codes, enabling quick decisions on whether a vehicle may proceed or requires further inspection.
