Nuevo León is preparing to expand the Colombia-Laredo International Bridge to increase freight capacity and support the movement of goods between Mexico and the United States.
The project will add infrastructure for commercial traffic and, according to the state government, construction could begin in May 2027. The expansion is designed to raise capacity to more than 15,000 crossings per day.
The project is part of a broader effort to strengthen the cross-border corridor. Plans also include widening Highway 1-Norte, which connects Nuevo León’s industrial areas with the international crossing.
U.S. authorities have also approved a pilot program extending operating hours for empty trucks and trailers. Beginning September 14, the crossing will operate from 7 a.m. to midnight for an initial 90-day period.
Colombia-Laredo is one of the Laredo area’s two main commercial freight crossings and provides an alternative to the World Trade Bridge.
The expansion is intended to distribute freight traffic more efficiently and add capacity along one of the most important overland trade corridors between Mexico and the United States.
