Mexico seeks removal of US auto tariffs during USMCA review

Mexico’s automotive industry is calling for the removal of US tariffs on vehicles made in Mexico as part of the upcoming review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Industry representatives say Mexican exports continue to face tariffs of up to 25% in some automotive categories, despite Mexico complying with the regional content requirements established under the trade agreement. According to the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA), manufacturers operating in Mexico already meet strict North American production standards.

The sector argues that maintaining these tariffs weakens North American competitiveness and disrupts regional trade flows. Executives also warned that prolonged trade uncertainty could affect future investment and manufacturing decisions across the region.

Mexican officials and business leaders have increasingly framed the USMCA review as an opportunity to reinforce regional economic integration and reduce trade barriers in strategic industries, including automotive, steel and aluminum.
