Trump Will Allow Duty-Free Beef Imports

U.S. President Donald Trump announced a temporary measure allowing up to 300,000 additional metric tons of beef intended primarily for ground beef production to enter the country tariff-free and outside existing import quotas for 90 days.

The measure is intended to increase domestic supply and ease pressure on ground beef prices, which have risen alongside broader beef costs. Trump said there is a commitment for the imported product to be sold at roughly 25% below current market prices. However, details on how that price reduction would be achieved have not yet been released.

The administration also says the temporary import window is designed to give the U.S. cattle industry additional time to rebuild inventories and production capacity while domestic demand is addressed.

At the time of the announcement, the supplying countries, participating companies and specific terms of the arrangement had not been disclosed. The White House and the U.S. Department of Agriculture had also not released further implementation details.
