US Plans Gradual Reopening to Mexican Cattle Imports

The United States is preparing to partially reopen its border to Mexican cattle after more than a year of restrictions linked to the New World screwworm.

Imports of Mexican cattle have been suspended during three separate periods since November 2024. U.S. authorities are now considering reopening crossings in Sonora on August 24, with Chihuahua expected to follow if the first stage proceeds successfully.

The restrictions have coincided with tighter cattle supplies in the United States. In June, placements into U.S. feedlots fell 17.9% from the previous month amid lower domestic production, drought conditions, and the absence of Mexican imports.

Beef prices have also risen. Between November 2024 and July 2026, ground beef and steak prices increased by roughly 22.4%, compared with 5.8% overall inflation during the same period.
