Mexico’s National Chamber of Commerce has raised concerns that an influx of Chinese-made school supplies could weigh on sales at local businesses during the back-to-school season.
The business group estimates that some retailers could see revenue losses of between 30% and 50% as they compete with lower-priced imported goods.
Canaco also raised concerns about products that, according to the organization, may enter the market without adequate quality certification or full compliance with applicable Mexican standards.
The group called for tighter oversight of imports and stronger verification that goods meet domestic requirements before reaching consumers.
The issue comes amid a broader increase in Asian imports to Mexico and growing calls from local industries for closer scrutiny of competitive conditions in the domestic market.
