US Raises Concerns Over Chinese Goods Entering Through Mexico

The United States has raised concerns that Mexico could be used as an entry point for Chinese goods seeking access to the U.S. market, adding another issue to ongoing trade discussions between the two countries.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Washington wants to prevent Chinese products from benefiting indirectly from North American trade preferences through operations based in Mexico.

The issue is closely tied to USMCA rules of origin, which determine whether products qualify for preferential tariff treatment within the region. U.S. officials are seeking tighter enforcement and greater scrutiny of inputs sourced from countries outside the agreement.

Mexico has said it maintains import controls and intends to comply with USMCA requirements while preserving highly integrated North American supply chains.

Chinese investment and components used in automotive, electronics, and other manufacturing industries are expected to remain key issues as the three countries move through the USMCA review process.

The matter will remain part of broader bilateral trade discussions between Mexico and the United States.
