Mexico is continuing trade discussions with the United States as it seeks relief from tariffs affecting key exports and aims to prevent additional measures from being introduced.
Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard is in Washington for several days of talks with U.S. officials. The Mexican government has indicated that progress could be made during the week, although no agreement has been announced.
A central issue is the tariff burden on some of Mexico’s largest export industries. Mexican steel, aluminum and related products currently face tariffs of 50%, while certain vehicle exports are subject to a 25% tariff.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said the negotiations are intended to reach an arrangement that supports the economic interests of both countries and expressed optimism about the prospects for an agreement.
The talks are taking place against a shifting North American trade backdrop following recent disagreements between the United States and Canada. Mexico, however, has continued its own discussions with Washington, focusing on issues that directly affect bilateral trade.
The negotiations also come as the three North American economies address broader questions surrounding the USMCA and the future of regional supply-chain integration.
For Mexican companies in the automotive, steel and manufacturing sectors, the outcome could have a direct impact on export costs, competitiveness and supply-chain planning for the U.S. market.
