Mexico and the United States Hold Final Talks Ahead of USMCA Review

Mexico and the United States have completed a new round of talks ahead of the formal review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, known as the USMCA.

The meeting took place in Washington and included Mexico’s Economy Secretary, Marcelo Ebrard, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. It was the second recent meeting between the two governments, following discussions held in Mexico City in late May.

According to Ebrard, the agenda included rules of origin, economic security, agriculture and the automotive industry. Mexico presented its views and proposals, which will now be reviewed by U.S. officials.

The formal USMCA review is scheduled to begin on July 1 with a virtual meeting among the three member countries. During the process, the parties will assess whether to extend the agreement under its current terms for another 16 years, through 2042, or move into annual reviews that could eventually lead to the agreement expiring in 2036.

Mexico and Canada have indicated support for renewing the agreement. The United States has not yet publicly confirmed a final position.
