Mexico’s Customs Revenue Falls in January 2026

Mexico’s customs revenue totaled 106.02 billion pesos in January 2026, marking a real annual decline of 9.1% compared to the same month in 2025, according to data from the National Customs Agency of Mexico.

Value-added tax (VAT) collections dropped 17.3% year over year to 69.2 billion pesos. In contrast, excise tax (IEPS) revenue rose 35.7%, reaching 19.19 billion pesos.

Operational activity also slowed. Total customs transactions fell 4.6% annually to 1.66 million procedures, while customs declarations declined 7.8% compared to January 2025.

By category, maritime customs offices reported a 6.6% real decrease in revenue. Inland customs collections fell 5.3%, and northern border offices posted the steepest drop, down 14.8% year over year.

Among major ports of entry, Manzanillo and Nuevo Laredo recorded double-digit declines. Veracruz stood out as the only major customs office with positive growth, posting a 5.1% annual increase.

The January figures contrast with the strong close to 2025, when customs revenue surged nearly 30% in real terms compared to 2024.

Customs revenue trends are closely watched as a gauge of trade flows and their contribution to federal public finances.
