Mexico Seeks to Expand Tequila Exports to India

Mexican tequila exports to India grew by more than 30% between 2024 and 2025, reaching roughly 2 million liters a year, according to Mexico’s National Chamber of the Tequila Industry.

India has become an increasingly important market for the industry, although Mexican tequila currently faces a 150% import tariff, limiting its competitiveness against other imported spirits.

Mexico’s Economy Ministry said both countries have already agreed on terms of reference for negotiations aimed at gradually lowering that tariff.

Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said the goal is to formalize an agreement in 2027, though the final tariff rate and reduction schedule have not yet been announced.

The United States remains by far the largest market for Mexican tequila, accounting for about 82% of exports, followed by Spain, Colombia, Australia, the United Kingdom, and France.

A lower tariff in India could create additional opportunities for Mexican producers, although the eventual impact will depend on the final terms of the agreement and demand growth in the Indian market.
