The United States expects to reach interim agreements with Mexico and Canada on parts of the USMCA review before the end of 2026.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told lawmakers that areas with broader consensus could be addressed first. More contentious issues—including rules of origin and labor and environmental provisions—may require negotiations extending into 2027.
Washington’s broader objective is to strengthen North American production and supply chains while improving the region’s ability to compete with economies such as China.
Greer traveled to Mexico City for another round of talks with Mexican officials. Discussions are expected to cover steel and aluminum tariffs, the automotive industry, economic security, agriculture, labor standards, and digital payment services.
His visit also includes meetings with President Claudia Sheinbaum and Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard.
