Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer at the National Palace to review ongoing USMCA discussions and other bilateral matters.
Sheinbaum said the meeting was part of a continuing dialogue between the two governments, supported by technical talks led by Mexico’s Economy Ministry and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.
This week’s discussions covered steel and aluminum tariffs, the automotive industry, economic security, agriculture, labor standards, and digital payment services.
According to Sheinbaum, the meeting also gave Mexican officials a clearer understanding of Washington’s proposals and expected timeline for the trade agreement’s review.
The president said she planned to present Mexico’s position on compliance with the 1944 Water Treaty, following concerns from U.S. lawmakers about the country’s water deliveries.
She also said Mexico had submitted arguments against potential additional tariffs under Section 301 of U.S. trade law.
The Mexican government wants the USMCA review process to focus on compliance rather than become a recurring renegotiation. It is also seeking to preserve preferential access for Mexican exports entering the U.S. market.
