Mexico Considers Tighter Rules on Used Vehicle Imports from the US

Mexico is considering additional restrictions on used vehicles imported from the United States as part of broader efforts to reduce transportation-related emissions.

Environment Minister Alicia Bárcena said the government is evaluating tighter controls on older vehicles that may generate higher levels of pollution.

Mexico already requires imported used vehicles to meet physical, mechanical, and environmental standards. Current rules also prohibit the permanent import of vehicles that are restricted from operating in their country of origin or fail to meet applicable environmental requirements.

Tariffs on used vehicles from the United States vary by age and destination. In Mexico’s border region, certain vehicles between five and nine years old face a 1% tariff, while older units may be subject to a 10% rate.

The proposal follows earlier measures targeting older diesel trucks and buses. Since 2025, Mexico has restricted imports of certain heavy-duty diesel vehicles more than ten years old unless they comply with required environmental standards.

Any additional restrictions could affect importers, dealers, and consumers in Mexico’s used-vehicle market, particularly in border states.
