Prices for male feeder cattle in Sonora have risen 19% since late July as livestock exports to the United States gradually resume.
During the first half of September, average prices reached MXN 129.81 per kilogram. Analysts at agricultural consultancy GCMA have linked part of the increase to expectations of stronger demand from U.S. buyers.
The reopening follows months of restrictions related to New World screwworm controls. Since the U.S. announced plans to resume cattle imports from Sonora in July, some producers have adjusted prices in anticipation of renewed export demand.
Final export prices, however, will also depend on negotiations with U.S. buyers, cattle specifications, and the additional costs of meeting sanitary requirements.
Those protocols can extend the amount of time animals spend in holding facilities and affect their weight, which may also influence their market value.
The pace of exports will continue to depend on sanitary conditions and operating capacity at border crossings.
