Mexico and India Launch Preferential Trade Agreement Talks

Mexico and India have formally launched negotiations for a Preferential Trade Agreement aimed at expanding bilateral trade and creating new investment opportunities.

The process began with the signing of Terms of Reference outlining the scope, structure, and negotiating framework for the proposed agreement. The move marks the start of formal talks and does not yet create any new tariff preferences.

Negotiations will cover market access for goods, rules of origin, customs procedures and trade facilitation, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, technical barriers to trade, dispute settlement, and trade remedies.

Both countries have identified automotive, chemicals, electronics, pharmaceuticals, agri-food, energy, medical devices, critical minerals, and advanced manufacturing as areas with potential for stronger commercial cooperation.

The talks build on earlier efforts by both governments to deepen economic ties and expand bilateral investment. Trade officials from Mexico and India have also discussed ways to strengthen supply chains and improve business links between the two markets.

The two sides are additionally considering a Mexican business mission to India in the first quarter of 2027 to connect companies and identify new commercial opportunities.

The final scope of the agreement will depend on the products covered, the terms negotiated, and the commitments eventually approved by both countries.
