Mexico and South Korea have concluded negotiations to modernize their Agreement for the Promotion and Reciprocal Protection of Investments, which has been in force between the two countries since 2002.
The modernization process began in 2019 and took seven years to complete. It is designed to bring the bilateral framework in line with changes in the international investment landscape while providing clearer conditions for companies and investors operating across both markets.
According to Mexico’s Ministry of Economy and South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the updated agreement is intended to create a more transparent and stable investment environment while balancing investor protections with each government’s ability to pursue legitimate public policy objectives.
The original agreement was signed in 2000 and entered into force two years later. Since then, economic ties between Mexico and South Korea have expanded, including investment and business activity across multiple industries.
The conclusion of negotiations does not mean the updated agreement is already in effect. The text will now undergo legal review and the respective domestic procedures required in both countries before it can be signed and implemented.
The modernization is part of a broader bilateral agenda aimed at strengthening economic cooperation and supporting new investment opportunities between Mexico and South Korea.
