Freight and foreign trade companies are calling for the resumption of empty commercial vehicle crossings from the United States into Mexico following temporary restrictions at several border ports.
Mexico’s National Customs Agency suspended these operations at crossings including Piedras Negras, Coahuila, and Matamoros, Tamaulipas. In Piedras Negras, the restriction took effect on September 9 and will remain in place until further notice.
The measure primarily affects trucks that deliver cargo in the United States and need to return empty to Mexico before taking on another shipment.
Industry representatives say the restrictions can lead to equipment shortages, route changes, longer turnaround times, and bottlenecks in cross-border supply chains.
Mexican customs officials have advised carriers and businesses to adjust their routes and schedules while the measure remains in effect. No date has been announced for the resumption of empty-truck crossings at Piedras Negras.
