Mexico’s Auto Exports Grow in Early 2026 Despite Challenging Trade Environment

Mexico’s light vehicle exports rose 2.45% year over year in the first quarter of 2026, according to data from the national statistics agency (Inegi). A total of 795,631 units were shipped abroad, an increase of 19,029 vehicles compared to the same period in 2025.

Vehicle production showed more modest growth, reaching 969,294 units between January and March, up 0.50% annually.

This export growth comes amid a complex global trade backdrop, particularly due to a 25% tariff imposed by the United States on most vehicles and auto parts since 2025.

The United States remained the main destination for Mexican auto exports, accounting for 75.8% of total shipments, underscoring the strong trade integration between the two countries.

Domestic demand also showed positive momentum, with vehicle sales increasing 3.71% in the first quarter to 381,653 units.

March stood out with a 4.2% rise in exports, totaling 310,205 units, reinforcing a steady upward trend for the sector at the end of the quarter.

Overall, the figures point to a resilient performance by Mexico’s automotive industry, with moderate gains across exports, production, and domestic sales.
