Global Food Prices Rise in August

Global food prices increased in August 2026 as weather risks, geopolitical tensions, and disruptions to some trade flows affected supply expectations, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

The FAO Food Price Index reached 133.3 points, up 1.9% from July and 2.5% from a year earlier. Despite the increase, the index remained 16.8% below its March 2022 peak.

All major commodity groups posted higher prices during the month. Sugar recorded the sharpest increase, rising 11.9% to its highest level since June 2025.

Cereal prices climbed 2.2%, supported by strong demand, weather concerns in key producing regions, and continued uncertainty surrounding Black Sea exports.

Dairy prices rose 2.3%, while meat increased 1%. Vegetable oil prices also moved higher, although at a more moderate pace.

FAO said weather conditions and trade disruptions remain important factors shaping international food prices and agricultural supply.
