The US Department of Agriculture expects the country to import up to 1.15 million metric tons of Mexican sugar during the 2026-27 marketing year. That would represent a 512% increase from the previous period.
According to information released by the Mexican government, the additional exports could generate as much as 4.76 billion pesos for domestic producers. The projected increase follows a decline in US demand, which fell to roughly 200,000 metric tons in the most recent season, compared with more than one million tons in 2022.
Mexican officials said they have been holding discussions with their US counterparts while working with growers and processors to strengthen the industry’s profitability. The government is also considering potential exports of sugarcane-based ethanol.
Official estimates indicate that about 500,000 Mexican families rely on the country’s sugar supply chain.
