The Northeast chapter of Mexico’s foreign trade council, COMCE, has proposed round-the-clock customs operations at the ports of Manzanillo and Lázaro Cárdenas to address rising imports from Asia and growing cargo congestion.
Manzanillo handled more than two million TEUs during the first half of 2026, up 10% from a year earlier and the highest volume recorded for the period.
At its current pace, the port could surpass four million containers by the end of the year.
The business group argues that longer customs hours could spread cargo inspections and clearance activity more evenly while giving importers, exporters, and carriers greater operating flexibility.
